Show and Tell (part 2)

Yesterday I blogged about the wool I got at the Stitch and Craft Show, well today I'm doing a show and tell about the amazing feats of crafting expertise that we saw.

Best in Show
The ladies behind the two Best in Show books had a stand exhibiting their knitted cats and dogs. These were incredible likenesses for each of the breeds and the amazing-ness of the work put into them is quite impressive.

Corgi

Schnauzer (?)

Beagle

Siamese

Cute cat, no idea of the breed!

The Knitted Village
I'm not sure of the story behind this exhibition, but the work was amazing. A miniature knitted village, complete with play park and recycling bins!!

A Gift of Quilts
This was an interesting exhibition of over 400 quilts which have been sewn to present to each country which will participate in this year's Olympic Games. The standard of these quilts was mind boggling, particularly to me who has never quilted anything. Here's a few pics of my fave quilts (pics taken on my iPhone so they're not great quality):

The panels in this quilt are all cross stitched.

Show and Tell (part 1)

This weekend, and friend and I went to the Stitch and Craft Show at Olympia and had a grand day out. I thought I'd do a show and tell of all the lovely wool I bought. Tomorrow I'll do a show and tell of the amazing things I saw at the show.

Here goes, take a look at these gorgeous additions to my wool stash!!

Sublime Cotton DK and Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk DK

Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk in the yummiest orange I've ever seen!

Sublime Baby Cotton Kapok DK in delicious pinks and blue

Wool glorious wool - Over £250's worth for just £110!!

There was a stand doing a £1 fabric lucky dip so I dived in and had two goes! Look what lovely fabric I got!

There was also a Make and Take table, we had a go at decopatch and I have to say it might just be my new little obsession! I totally loved it and have plans to decopatch many things in the near future :) The funniest thing was that we were the only grown ups at the table, and both my friends had finished their hearts before I had even turned over to do the back! (ever the perfectionist, but I tried really hard at being slap dash!).

Look what I did!

Totally love the peonies!

Come back tomorrow for a look at cats, dogs, a village and gorgeous quilts.

What next...?

Hello, I'm back!

The last week has been a whirlwind of wedding excitement as my wee sister got married in a beautiful castle in our homeland of Scotland. The run up to the wedding was fraught with stress, excitement and (some) drama but once the day came, everything went swimmingly! All year, we've been focusing on the wedding and I for one, wasn't planning any further than that day. The thought of organising past that date was too much for my lttle head. Now it has passed, and the new Mr & Mrs are on their honeymoon (Thailand) my whole calendar for August is free!

So what next?

Well, I don't know yet.

This weekend I shall be thinking about how to get back into my making mojo and of course planning some exciting blog posts. So watch this space, and in the meantime, here is a wee pic of the outstandingly beautiful bride on her fairytale wedding day.

A day in London Town...Part 2

Part 1 of this blog can be found here.

In addition to going to the hummingbird Bakery and Liberty when we went to London at the weekend, we also went to the Tower Bridge using the 2for1 offer you get with your train tickets. And it was £8 well spent!

I was concerned my vertigo would flare up and cause me to freak out, but it didn't. This was largely because there was a lift to take you up to the top (phew) and the walkways were well 'enclosed' and there was no chance of accidentally falling over the railings. The views were pretty cool, although the London skyline doesn't do it for me (sorry).

It was such a lovely day, with perfect blue sky and fluffy clouds, it did look quite pretty. The bridge itself is a lot bigger than I gave it credit for and the displays inside were quite interesting considering they're about bridges. One of the boards had a quote from someone saying "London's Tower Bridge is the most famous bridge in the world" and I must say that I disagree with that statement. I don't know what the world's most famous bridge is but if you asked me, Tower Bridge would probably not feature in my list. I have seen photos of far more impressive feats of bridge engineering. I would say it is the most ornate bridge I've ever seen and for its time, it's pretty amazing, but to me it's not the most famous in the world.

Did you know it still opens 3 times a day? And in the 1970s a double decker bus jumped the gap as it was opening cos the driver wasn't paying attention. It took 8 years to build and only 10 men died during it's construction. That's quite impressive considering the time it was created and the fact that they used wooden ladders to do the job! It is clad in Portland stone and uses Welsh slate and the steel girders were made in Scotland. So I guess the bridge encompasses everything that Britain was about in those days and it truly represents all of the nations' best resources and skills. I can see why it's such a great attraction for visitors and the London skyline would not be the same without it. It looks great at night when it's all lit up.

After taking in some cultural, historical and retail experiences, it was time to head off for an alcoholic experience. Vinopolis is a fun wine tasting experience and we got in using our Tesco vouchers so only paid for half a ticket with 'real money'.
Whilst I enjoyed it, I can safely say I didn't learn anything about wine or tasting wine and I didn't like any of the 6 wines I tried. I did however discover I like Bombay Sapphire Gin in a cocktail as we got to taste some of those too! So now I'll be saving my pennies to get a bottle and a cocktail shaker to make some at home! We were interested in speaking to the wine maker from Uruguay which we were told about at the beginning but by the time we got to his section, he'd packed up and gone home, so that was a disappointment. I didn't know they made wine in Uruguay...

At £26 for the cheap ticket, you'd have to be really into your wine to get the maximum value for money. I felt it lacked any atmosphere and the staff were not particularly interested in helping you choose which wines to taste. So for a complete novice (ie me) this means you end up pointing at any old bottle and saying 'that one please' in the hope it's something you'll enjoy. If you're going there for a booze up, you're best going to the pub next door. But that's just my opinion and I'm sure there are loads of people who think it's great and go back again and again. I would say it is probably a great venue for a corporate event of product launch.

After this we ambled along the South Bank and marvelled at the state some people were in so early in the evening. You just never know what you're going to see in London!

Next time I'm in London I shall be going to the O2 to see the Royal Ballet which I am beyond excited about!!

A day in London Town...Part 1

This blog is in two parts as there's lots to share! Part 2 to follow tomorrow.

Part 1

At the weekend, Mr PC and I had a trip to London which these days are few and far between (too expensive for regular visits!).

The absolute first thing we HAD to do was go to the brand spanking new branch of The Hummingbird Bakery which just opened near Liverpool Street Station.  After much deliberation, I opted for  a chocolate whoopie pie, and WOW was it amazing! Every bite was like a quick visit to heaven and I was sad when I ate the last bit. I will definitely be making these from the cookbook soon!!

We also went to 'world-famous' Liberty for a mooch.

Liberty - taken using the VintageCam app on my iPhone

Ever since Cherry Menlove blogged about the opening of the Dining Room, I have wanted to go feast my eyes on it! It was amazing. The perfect haven for any homebody. I was bitterly disappointed that pretty much everything I liked/wanted/had to have was out of my budget (the joys of being a contract worker) but I loved looking at all the gorgeous housewares anyway. I also drooled over the srcummy fabrics in the haberdashery dept and swooned over some truly amazing ribbons (£5 p/m, eek!) and trimmings. And, if you're wondering what I bought. Well, I can exclusively reveal, I bought this:

A large metal button with white and silver colours

Yep, that's right, a solitary button. That's all I could afford! It will take pride of place on a fuchsia pink jacket which my mum has knitted for me. I think next time I go to Liberty, I'll have to save some pennies beforehand so that I can treat myself to something lovely.

Liberty takes up the whole street!

That's all for today, tune in tomorrow for Part 2!

Royal-tea

Well, wasn't the Royal Wedding just as wonderful as we all expected?? I absolutely loved it, and really think William and Catherine will have a long and happy marriage. The dress was beautiful, the bridesmaids almost outshone the bride,  the Abbey looked amazing and the weather was lovely and sunny too! My favourite thing apart from The Dress was the trees in Westminster Abbey. I thought they looked fab and it's really nice that they will be planted in the grounds of Highgrove. Makes me wish I had a tree on my wedding day...

To celebrate, I hosted a Royal Wedding Tea Party and it was a brilliant day! I spent all of last Thursday baking and preparing so that on Friday I could get up and dressed (in my posh frock and hat) and watch the telly. We had such a good time, we are all too busy having fun to remember to take any photos which is a shame cos my tea table was looking pretty and full of lovely china and cakes!

I made bride and groom shaped biscuits which were a real hit (altho I fell out with the royal icing and so the grooms were 'naked'), and we munched on these during the ceremony and sipped tea from my vintage china cups. Other items on the menu included:

Victoria Sandwich - homemade - this cake was created for Queen Victoria's jubilee
Battenburg Cake - homemade - this cake was created for Queen Victoria's Granddaughter's wedding to one of the Battenburgs (later changed their name to Mountbatten so they sounded less 'German')
Coconut and cherry slice - my mum made this and it was devine!
Cherry scones - homemade by mum

I had never made a victoria sandwich or a battnburg but I must say they both turned out beautifully and were really quite scrummy! I wanted the menu to be traditionally British, and for the most part it was. We also had cheese and baguette bread which was a bit random for a tea party but actually worked really well as I had decided not to make sandwiches, so thanks to Laura for that one!

All in all, we had a lovely day and no doubt in 20 years when someone asks where I was when the King got married, I'll have a nice story to tell!

How did you celebrate the Royal Wedding?

Thursday, 28 April 2011

Preparation is key...

Today I am preparing for a wedding - the Royal Wedding - if you're a miserable old bore who hates the Royal Wedding, best not read any further. You have been warned!

Only 48hrs to go and I'm in the midst of baking up a royal storm for my Royal Wedding Tea Party!! There will be all sorts of deliciousness on offer and I am making traditionally British cakes. Usually my baking has an American style, so I thought I'd go a bit British for such a grand occasion. I'm making a Victoria Sandwich and a Battenburg which are both very regal cakes designed especially for the Royals of their time. I have never made either of these so it could be interesting! My mum is making scones and a coconut cherry slice which are also some of my top faves and quite British too. Not bothering with sandwiches cos who wants them over cake? Not me!

I'm also polishing my 'royal' vintage teacups - Royal Albert, Royal Worcester, Royal Vale, Royal Stafford etc - we shall be drinking our tea in quintessentially British style, with teapots and proper sugar bowls and jugs of milk too!

Everyone is to dress as though attending a wedding and we shall be sipping Champagne and Pimms after the ceremony, which we'll be watching on the telly box. It'll be a rather civilised affair, and I'm quite looking forward to it!

NB. I am not in the least bit 'British' and don't really celebrate the monarchy, but a Royal Wedding is a great excuse for a party and every party needs a theme!!

Innocent Vintage Arcade Fun

Hope you had a lovely Easter holiday weekend. We Mr PC and I had a great time and have amassed a good selection of chocolate (altho he did forget to buy me an Easter egg, but the less said about the better...). We had a most lovely Easter Sunday out together where we happened upon a great little craft fair/fete/garden sale in the middle of nowhere which was well worth the £2 entry. Have you ever gone to an event and said 'It better be good'? Well this is what we said when the lady at the gate said 'That's 4 quid please'. And we were not disappointed!!

The first thing we saw was a Slush Puppie stall, a real Slush Puppie stall, not the modern rubbish excuse for a slushie you get these days. Mr PC was overcome with indecision when trying to choose which flavour to have. The second thing we saw was a brilliant old fashioned fairground. There were Chair- o-Planes (my all time fave), a mini train, seesaw boats and then the best bit for Mr PC was the arcade games. These games were seriously old school, they even had the prices in shillings and pence, that's how old they were! Some of them didn't work but we didn't mind as they were only 2p (or a half penny) a go. My fave was the fortune teller where you put your money in and choose a question for it to answer. The brilliant questions reflect the innocent times of this game. Delightful! It's times like these that I love my iPhone (other clever phones are available) best, as I got some good snaps of these great arcade games.

We had a good wander and then felt disappointed to have missed out on having a stall for Princess Crafts as we didn't know about this rather cool event. Ah well, there's always next time! We had a great time as a visitor and bought some herbs and other plants for our garden which made Mr PC very happy. But the best purchase of the day has got to be the £3 for a large glass of Pimms which I had instead of a slushie. Happy days!

Roll on the Pimms Season!!

Bonnie Scotland is where my heart is

My lack of blog posts recently is largely due to a trip to the homeland (Scotland) which was great fun and jam packed with activity! It wasn't a relaxing break (too busy to relax), but it was a welcomed change of scenery and I had the chance to visit some of my fave places. Sadly, Hubby had to stay at home in Essex to do that thing grown ups call 'work'...

Here's a few pics from my trip away:

I don't remember where this is, but it was a stunning view nonetheless!

I also had a lovely day in Edinburgh, where I feel most at peace and 'at home', the reasons for this are numerous and that's a whole other story which I might share one day. The weather was fabulous (considering the time of year) and I had such a lovely time  I was too busy to take any pics, oops!

I'm back now and got a super busy week ahead before my first ever Havering Handmade on Sat 9th. More info on that to come soon.
